A few minute's walk from the town square will bring you to the seafront and the Pier. There is a sandy beach beside the pier, and it is well serviced by various food and drink outlets.  Waterperry Gardens

Friday 17 August 2012

Waterperry Gardens are steeped in history with the famous, purely herbaceous border dating back to the 1930s. The two hundred feet border which runs the length of the old kitchen garden wall gives a wonderful display of colour and form from May through to the first frosts of autumn. Over the years new features have been added to the gardens including in 2011, a contemporary border which is the antitheses of our traditional herbaceous border. There's a mixed double colour border which shows each colour change reflected in the border opposite. A formal knot garden reflects plant that would have been found in the Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and Victorian times. The Mary Rose Gardens show how different types of rose can be used in different settings and there is a waterlily canal, herbaceous nursery stockbeds, island beds, alpine garden and a riverside walk. On your arrival, you will have time to visit the tea room for refreshments before commencing on a 1 hour guided tour of the gardens at 11.30am. Finishing the tour at 12.30pm, you may choose to have lunch. There is plenty to see during the afternoon.

  • Waterperry- grown plants, fruits and trees
  • A plant centre housed within the old Victorian walled garden
  • Delicious hand-made lunches, cakes and patisseries in the teashop
  • A gallery specialising in British, mainly Oxfordshire, artists' work
  • A museum of rural life

The Buckinghamshire Chilterns

A Guided tour with morning tea/coffee and biscuits - and early afternoon lunch (limited walking)

Fiday 5 October 2012

Enjoy a day exploring the peaceful woody lanes and picturesque towns and villages of the Buckinghamshire Chilterns. This is 'Midsomer Murders' territory. Discover some ancient wall paintings, visit Jordans Friends Meeting House and the Hughenden Valley, and sit together for morning tea/coffee and biscuits (all inclusive).

We will meet the guide for morning refreshments at a pub near Old Beaconsfield. We then set off on a carefully crafted scenic route through the Chiltern Hills. From high in the coach it's like flicking through the pages of 'Country Life', a wealth of grand country houses. We drive through the beautiful 'Chequers' valley where the Prime minister's country retreat is hidden in hundreds of acres of mellow parkland. We hear about the Bodgers who worked in the woods, see the grave of Benjamin Disraeli in the magnificent Hughenden Valley and hear the curious story of his burial. Look out for the Red Kites, magnoficent birds with wingspans of up to five feet which have been reintroduced locally in recent years. We'll all stop to discover some rare wall paintings from the 13th century.

Back to the pub for lunch which today is shepherd's pie served with vegetables and gravy or a vegetarian alternative.

In the afternoon we will visit Jordans. The Jordans Meeting House was built in 1688, after the Declaration of Indulgence passed by James II gave freedom to Friends to build their own meeting houses. It was built in just six weeks, using simple brick for the floor and the outside walls. The original floor is stil in use, and about 80% of the glass is original despite the fire of 2005.

Outside there are simple graves in the Quaker fashion including that of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania and nearby is the Mayflower Barn said to be built from the timbers of the Mayflower ship that took the Pilgrim Fathers to America. We will stay here for tea and biscuits for which we will be asked to give a donation of £2.00 per person towards the upkeep of the property.
